ToyHopper

The holidays are coming, the holidays are coming! Can you sense the panic in those words? No? Trust me, it’s there. Every year Christmas presents become a bigger challenge because I’ve got to come up with new gift ideas for all of my children. We have three girls and one boy, ranging in age from eleven to sixteen months. Figuring out boy gifts is never a problem (Go action figures!), but when it comes to my girls lately I am at a loss. My eldest is at a funny in-between age. My next daughter uses most of what my eldest already has and the baby has access two older sisters toddler toys. There is much to like about Toy Hopper. First, the layout is very appealing and easy to use. You can browse through a carousel to see pictures of different gifts. Tap on one of the pictures and the app brings up a larger image which you can “flip” to read details about the the toy. Details include the price, age range and description. Some toy descriptions include a video showing the product in action. At the end of the description are buttons that will allow you to email out a product link add it to a wish list or go directly to Amazon.com for a purchase. In addition to the picture carousel you can view a list of all the toys featured in Toy Hopper. From this list you can filter products out by age, price, type and theme. Each filter you apply narrows down the list of toys. Your final list will include a thumbnail picture, the product price and a snippet of it’s description.I’m a big fan of Toy Hopper’s design, it is extremely user friendly and does a fantastic job keeping the focus on the toys. The quality of content didn’t disappoint either, thanks to the app I’ve come up with some great gift ideas.

iWrite Words

WriteWords has a simple opening menu that letskids choose between numbers, capital letters, lower case letters, words in all caps, words in all lower case. Kids trace the letters with their finger, guided by a little crab that they drag for each stroke.Crab will not respond to wrong motions, and will hang around till the motion is completed. Your kid will hear praise for each completed letter – “Excellent”“great job!” as well as cute sounds for each stroke, and shaking off the letters when they complete. The app has been engaging enough for Sal to take an interest inpracticing his letters and has helped certain letters like lower case ethat he has ingrained a different motion pattern than normal.    From areward perspective, it allows you to shake down the letters into avirtual hole before progressing, not a strong reward, but a funelement.  The whole app is delightful to behold. Bright background colors arejuxtaposed against equally bright and scribbly child-like artwork thatconvey the word being spelled. You and your child will enjoy tracingyour finger along those necessary building blocks of language. With itsmemorable artwork and way cool physics engine, it is sure to entertainand teach your child. Its got an intuitive interface for young children. It has high qualitygraphics and effects. I have no hesitation in recommending this app forchildren ready to start learning to write. To me, this is exactly thesort of app I am looking for in my quest to have apps that are fun, butteach my kids something really useful in the real world.
