re:Invent 2017 – AWS SageMaker, DeepLens Bring Machine Learning To ‘Everyday Devs’ Machine learning is a key component of many Amazon Web Services (AWS), from its database products to security solutions. The company has made a concerted effort in making machine learning more accessible to all its customers and partners, regardless their level of expertise. AWS announced a partnership with Microsoft in October to create “Gluon”, a deep learning library that aims at helping developers build complex models. It also offers machine learning courses for partners at both intermediate and beginner levels. AWS recently launched the Amazon ML Solutions Lab, which connects data scientists with organizations who are starting their first machine-learning projects. AWS announced the next steps in its efforts to democratize machine-learning at its reInvent conference in Las Vegas this week. The new SageMaker machine-learning platform and DeepLens programmable cam are both the result of “a long history of machine learning at Amazon,” according Andy Jassy (AWS CEO), who presented the products during Wednesday’s reInvent keynote. Amazon SageMaker Now available, Amazon SageMaker allows “everyday developers” to easily create and deploy machine-learning models, Jassy stated in his keynote. SageMaker comes pre-configured algorithms or users can create their own. Jassy says that model-training is as simple as one click. Randall Hunt, AWS Senior Technical Advocate, shared more information about SageMaker in a Wednesday blog post. He said SageMaker consists of three parts:

re:Invent 2017 – AWS Makes it Easier to Sort Through Data in S3 Storage and Glacier Storage The two new Amazon Web Services (AWS), features that were unveiled at this week’s re:Invent conference aim to make the Amazon S3 storage and AWS Glacier storage services more useful and efficient for analytics. AWS CEO Andy Jassy presented the services, Amazon S3 Select, and Glacier Select, during Wednesday’s re:Invent keynote presentation. Jassy stated that Amazon S3 is the most popular service in the industry for data lakes. However, users often ask for a faster way to filter data so they only get the relevant results the first time. Amazon S3 Select is designed to address this issue by “[enabling] apps to retrieve only a subsection of data from an object using simple SQL expressions,” Randall Hunt, Senior Technical Evangelist at AWS, stated in a blog post. This results in faster processing times and lower resource utilization costs. Amazon S3 Select is currently available for free preview. Sign up here to get started. The new Glacier Select service, which is available for archival data storage, performs a similar function. Glacier Select allows users to run queries directly on Glacier data and retrieves only the relevant data in minutes. In his keynote, Jassy explained that customers have the option of using Glacier to supplement their Amazon S3 data lake. AWS Launches a Machine Learning Competency for Partners at re:Invent 2017. AWS Partner Network (APN), members with data science expertise can now apply to become certified Amazon Web Services (AWS), machine learning partners. The AWS Machine Learning competency was launched this week in Las Vegas at AWS reInvent 2017 Global Partner Summit. It is open to APN partners who have solutions that “help organizations solve data challenges, enable data learning and data science workflows or offer SaaS-based capabilities that enhance end apps with machine intelligence,” AWS stated in its announcement. The machine learning competency includes three categories: Data Services (Platform Providers), SaaS/API providers, and Data Services (Data Services). Partners must be registered as advanced-tier APN Technology Partners to be eligible for any of these. Additional requirements are listed in this AWS datasheet.

re:Invent 2017 – AWS Launches Cloud Based Video Processing Service Amazon Web Services (AWS), has revealed a new suite video-editing products and delivery products that are based on the acquisition of Elemental Technologies, a digital media company, two years ago. The entire AWS Media Services range was announced Monday at the 2017 AWS reInvent conference in Las Vegas. It is now generally available as a pay-as you-go model. According to the product website, the suite includes five solutions that “make it easy to create reliable, broadcast-quality video workflows within the Cloud.” Each solution can be used individually or in combination depending on the user’s needs for video processing, editing, or packaging.
